It won't be long before Palmer College students have a new place to live. A multi-level housing complex is going up on Perry Street in Davenport, and it's going up fast. The contractor, Oxbow Development Corp., brought in pre-fab units on trailers for The Villas at Palmer complex and Tuesday, workers began using a huge crane to start putting them in place. The units come already equipped with everything needed for the apartment, according to Kelly Young of Oxbow. From her Quad City office, she says they build student housing for several colleges and universities, but this is the first time they have built a complex with pre-built units. According to Young, the benefits include less waste during construction and better insulation for sound and fire, since the walls of the units have to withstand travel on a trailer. And they go up fast. Excavation for the project began this winter and students are expected to move in by July 1st. The complex was designed for Palmer students but is privately owned and open to the public at market rates. Oxbow is also currently building student housing for Scott Community College in Bettendorf.
